Kirk Nachman: Without Opus

December 7, 2013 – January 4, 2014

Without Opus is a graphic translation of select texts at their most structural. Golden Age comics, genre films, and classic animation inform these drawings’ gestural method, which also employ the angular compositional strategies and shadow-riddled palette of early noir cinema. Disregarding linear plot and context, the work supplements unnamed, incidental characters for known protagonists. Each piece is open-ended and fragmentary — an installment in a slapstick Queneau-esque exercise that borrows from forgotten detective novels (John MacDonald’s “The Brass Cupcake”), experimental science fiction (J. G. Ballard’s “The Atrocity Exhibition”) and The Book of Genesis (King James version), alike. Assuming that all narratives are fundamentally familiar, this silent collection of imagery triggers the irrepressible impulse to simply finish the story.
