The Cherokee Street Latino Business Owners Association is pleased to announce the annual Mexican Independence Day Festival celebration happening September 15-16, 2012 on Cherokee Street (Iowa to Nebraska) from 11:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m.
Commemorating Mexico’s declaration of independence from Spain in 1810, the Cherokee Street Latino Business Owners Association invites the St. Louis community to celebrate and recognize the national holiday of Mexican Independence Day. This festival will bring the Mexican and Mexican-American communities together as they celebrate the rich heritage, history, and culture of their Mexican ancestors who fought for their independence from the Spanish government during the early 1800’s. The determination to succeed in seeking liberty, and correcting social injustices imposed by the Spaniards inspired Father Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla to proceed and execute his plans for revolution on September 15, 1810.
Musical acts appearing during the weekend are Conjunto Sueño Norteño, Tamborazo Eskandalozo Banda Aires del Sur, Deseperados del Norte, Boogie Chyld, Quintinz Musical, Conjunto Navegante, Grupo Nomada, Tormenta Alacranera, The Prince, Salsa Cielo Dance, DJ Coro, Dj Erny, DJ Wild Horse, plus many more bringing the heart and soul of Mexico to life on the stage at California Avenue (Musical acts and entertainment are subject to change). There will also be activities for adults and children: mechanical bull, inflatable jumpers, petting zoo, and face painting. Highlight: Traditional El Grito de Independencia (Hail of Independence), with special guests Mayor Francis Slay, Alderman Craig Schmid (20th Ward), Alderman Ken Ortmann (9th Ward), Consul Roberto Caldera Arroyo (Mexican Consulate Kansas City), and local legislators and elected officials. Along with the traditional festival food fare: Fajitas, Carne al Pastor, Chimichangas, Margaritas, Piña colada, Corn-on-the-cob, and Ice Cream there will also be other booths specializing many different culinary delights from Mexico.
