Some Important News!

Our friends and neighbors in Dutchtown have elected the first openly gay Alderman in Saint Louis’s History! This coincides with one of Saint Louis’s Missouri State Rep, Jeanette Mott Oxford; one of only two openly gay representatives in Jefferson City.

This is important not just for Dutchtown, or for the parts of Cherokee Street that fall in the 59th representative district. This is a clear indication that Saint Louis is changing, and rapidly at that. Taboos on homosexuality are lifting more and more. Openly gay politicians and community leaders are springing up all over the place. Saint Louis is feeling more and more like a safe place for homos like me. With more work, solidarity, and a good dose of activism we could see Saint Louis as a major base of gay rights in Missouri. Eventually bringing the rest of the state into the 21st century and repealing that draconian anti-gay marriage act.

I am proud to be a part of what will be an ever growing progressive (and sometimes radical) movement here in Saint Louis. Every day I am filled with optimism and hope at the signs of rejuvenation and social progress that are popping up all over this city.

For those who don’t know, are curious, or are generally unfamiliar with City politics, the person in the picture is [me.] the newly elected Alderman – Shane Cohn.

I’m very much looking forward to supporting the neighborhoods located in the 25th ward, our city as a whole, and advocating for progressive St. Louis!

Thanks to everyone for your continued support, spread the good word, and keep up the great work!

“The beauty of the maturation of Cherokee Street over the past couple of months is that it has not shown a familiar trajectory for a St. Louis revitalization. There are no posh nightclubs with "pioneer" status nor any ultra-elite art galleries present.

Rather, there's an organized community dedicated to improving quality of life and maintaining the uniqueness of St. Louis's most diverse and urban business district.”
