Operation Brightside Project Blitz

Posted by James McKee on March 29, 2010 | 2 Comments

Saturday, April 10 is our designated Blitz day. Project Blitz is simply a city-wide clean-up effort. It’s your chance to contribute to the improvement of Marine Villa. What may seem like no big deal is actually the foundation of what makes the best neighborhoods in Saint Louis. People notice clean streets. They also notice those that are out doing the cleaning and showing that their neighborhood is cared for.

If your block has never participated in the annual clean-up, it’s likely because no one has come forth to lead the event. But it’s so easy!

Events at The Archive

Chicken&Waffles_Screening

We’re writing to invite you to a new used bookstore that has opened at 3215 Cherokee Street: The Archive.  Several months ago, four local partners cooperatively decided to establish a new bookstore on Cherokee Street to augment the literary and artistic culture that is burgeoning on the south side of our city, and to forge a new community space.  Have you been to Cherokee Street lately?  Cherokee Street is on the verge of creating a new paradigm for what St. Louis City living can be.  Our street runs through the most diverse neighborhood in the city.  I don’t know of a better place to experience authentic Mexican food and chapbook madness, buy weird junk cheap, and brush shoulders with anarchists, dreamers, activists, revolutionaries, and little old ladies.

Cherokee Enhancement Project Update

Posted by Cherokee St. News on March 24, 2010 | 1 Comment

Update from 20th ward Alderman Craig Schmid

Below are the questions and responses to our questions that I received, regarding timing of the project, staging of the project, the Gingko trees, the vault under the sidewalk at 2626-30 Cherokee, and the storage of the decorative posts.
Thanks.
Craig

1. When will the project commence, when do we anticipate that it will be completed?
We have not received concurrence from MoDOT on this project. Once we do receive their concurrence it will take approximately five (5) to six (6) weeks to execute the contract and issue a Notice to Proceed (NTP). The term of the contract is 200 work days from the date of the NTP.

2. How will the project be conducted? Will the entire stretch from Jefferson to Nebraska be torn up; will just one block at a time be torn up; will one side of the street (north side or south side) be torn up along the entire stretch from Jefferson to Nebraska; or will one side of one block be torn up at a time?

MVNA Meeting March 22

Posted by Carrie Freeman on March 18, 2010 | Leave a Comment

The next Marine Villa Neighborhood Association meeting is Monday, March 22, at 7:00 pm. Remember, come at 6:30 if you want to meet with police and NSOs.

This month’s guest speaker is Connie Backfisch of Dutchtown South Community Corporation, and the topic is the 2010 Census. Completing the census is very important. Saint Louis receives tax money for every resident counted, so make sure you’re counted. All residents who attend the meeting and turn in their completed census form will be entered to win a $25 grocery store gift card. Don’t miss your chance to win!

The MVNA meetings are held at the Monroe School at 3641 Missouri. The parking lot is accessible from Indiana at Miami. This month, we will meet in the library, which is on the second floor. Elevators are available near the cafetaria (enter through door #5 by the parking lot).

Meetings are open to all residents. You do not have to be a paid member to show your support for your neighborhood. If you have interest in making Marine Villa a better place to live, we would love to see you at the meeting!

Minutes from last month’s general meeting and this month’s board meeting are available on the MVNA website.

See you at the meeting!

The 20 Portrait Project Exhibit – Updated

Posted by Cherokee St. News on March 16, 2010 | Leave a Comment

22455_1364175505529_1265872074_31090498_1838621_n The 2o Portrait Project Exhibit is the first in David Langley’s affordable art series and will take place at 7pm this Friday March 19th somewhere on Cherokee.  Actual location to be disclosed in a mid-week interview.

“Unfortunately, today, money is our primary voice. We support what we buy. This is a sincere attempt to present the easiest possible opportunity for anyone, of any economic bracket, to ‘support the arts’ and become an Art Collector. Better still, to provide the opportunity for one to possess an original portrait to hang on their walls. Once you have experienced the joy of having original artwork on your walls, you will find that the store-bought alternative truly pales in comparison.”

Portraiture: Not just for the ruling classes anymore!

UPDATE: Location announced on The Studio Chronicle to be a newly rennovated space at 2718 Cherokee Street.  Full interview and additional details at: thestudiochronicle.blogspot.com
