Posted by Cherokee St. News on February 23, 2010 | Leave a Comment

2831491991_a0985c97a4STL-Style is hosting the next City Affair gathering on the topic of Gentrification.
MARCH 4, 2010
7:30-9:00 PM
STYLEhouse (STL-Style)
3155 Cherokee St.
Saint Louis, Mo. 63118

Is gentrification a problem in Saint Louis?
Gentrification is a loaded term. Literally referring to the process of renovating and improving (esp. a house or district) so that it conforms to middle-class taste, it is entwined with issues of politics, class, and race. How one defines gentrification and whether it is a positive or negative depends on how it has affected you.
We will look to our panelists for discussion about the function of gentrification, the dynamics that they perceive as contributing to gentrification, and what can be done through policy to minimize negative effects of gentrification.

You can also sign up to have a garden bed of your very own this summer!!  Kids welcome with adult supervision!

houses for Haiti best yet

Anyone who has met Izzi Jackson-Cameron, our neighbor from down the street at Jackson Pianos, knows her effervescent enthusiasm emits a magnetic field far larger than her five-year old frame.  So it’s no surprise that, inspired to help out and connect with the crisis in Haiti, she enlisted her entire school in an effort to aim their creativity at fundraising…

Here’s the details, organized by Izzi’s mom Morgan Cameron:

Arch Reactor

Posted by Jason Deem on February 1, 2010 | 3 Comments

With the grand opening of Arch Reactor in the Lemp Brewery complex, Cherokee Street can now add hackers to the growing list of active niche collectives that call Cherokee home.  The event featured a variety of presentations ranging from photoshop techniques to costume design, robot creations, cutting edge and vintage computers, a CNC machine, a working 3D printer and beer.  Turned out to be a recipe for a great event.
