Samba in the City

Samba in the City

Benton Park Neighborhood Association (BPNA) welcomes music lovers of all ages to its second concert of 2009: Samba in the City. This unique evening event combines the soothing and festive music of Samba Bom with live art performances by Art Dimensions artists, a children’s paint area, and food from award-winning eateries — all in the idyllic setting of Benton Park.

Headlining the concert, Samba Bom, which translates to “good samba,” is a Saint Louis-based ensemble whose diverse backgrounds join together to celebrate Brazilian rhythms and melodies. Their repertoire includes fresh interpretations of samba classics along with original works, and even twists on American pieces. Samba Bom founder Moacyr Marchini explains, “Mixing musical cultures only enhances the versatility and likeability of the Brazilian sound.”

(Anti) Wrecking Ball

This Thursday, Off Broadway hosts the Anti-Wrecking Ball, a joyous evening of entertainment for a worthy cause. Great bands and burlesque performers have contributed their talents to help raise money for legal fees needed for the Friends of the San Luis to appeal a circuit court judge’s ruling that citizens have no standing to appeal the actions of the St. Louis Preservation Board.

We seek to overturn that ruling for future benefit. While the San Luis Apartments is lost, there will be future battles and citizens deserve full rights in each one of them. Join us Thursday to have great fun while building necessary financial resources.

World Agricultural Forum, raid, St. Louis, police, search, seizure, protest, city, Cherokee Street

May 16,2003 – St. Louis city police carry out items seized from a home in the 3000 block of Cherokee Street Friday afternoon. The house was believed to contain protests of the World Agricultural Forum. (Dawn Majors/P-D)

At the time, police insisted that raids targeting protesters were meant to prevent violence at the 2003 World Agriculture Forum in St. Louis.  Now police officials say the raids were a mistake.
The St. Louis Board of Police Commissioners apologized and agreed to pay damages to four people who were among those detained or searched because they intended to protest genetically modified crops at the forum.

Posted by Dustin Newman on August 17, 2009 | Leave a Comment

On the sunny afternoon of Saturday August 22nd, please come to Cherokee Street and join us for an afternoon of intoxicated entertainment! Tons of bands, beer, BBQ and youse!

Music will be pouring onto the pavement all stereo-like with STL winners Medical Tourists, Godfodder, SKR, Cardiac Arrest and others playing at the 2 shops, alternating like panned audio!

There will be 2 different food parties happenin’ in the backyards of BP and Apop. A little orphan told us that BP is rumoured to have a hotdog stand and sno-cones! Apop is workin’ on cajoling a certain grill-meister into reigning over their fire. Meat is Murder, and murder is delicious!

Cherokee Street – Far West Side

Posted by Jason Deem on August 13, 2009 | 5 Comments

It seems two-way traffic is permitted on Cherokee between Grand & Gravois as long as it’s heading East.

cherokeewest

ONE WAY?
New “Do Not Enter” Signs for cars heading West
All cars are parked facing East
“One Way” Signs Facing East

OR TWO-WAY?
New Traffic signal with Green Light for cars heading West
“Stop” sign at Grand & Cherokee for vehicles heading West
“Two-Way Traffic” sign at Grand to warn vehicles heading East of oncoming traffic.

I’m guessing this is in some sort of transition but it’s been this way for awhile.  Anyone know what the plan is here?

Opening reception Friday, August 14, 2009, from 7 to 11 p.m. at Fort Gondo Compound for the Arts.
Electrosugar Electroshock is an art installation by Maria Elena Marshall.

Artist statement:
“Disposable moments – the mundane spectacle. Self awareness is what makes us human. Humans are decidedly in the world. We need to once again acknowledge what is around us. It does not end at acknowledgment, action is needed, but first we have to remind people that there is a world out there.
“I want to be overwhelmed by something right in front of me; draw attention to the void.
“Orchids, ribcages, hospital beds, and bus stops; all these fragments of what is around us ground us in the present. The disjointed, overwhelming here and now.”
“There is also the distinct possibility that this won’t come across in the slightest.
“Drawings on the walls, a mattress … you know you want to see it.”  - Maria Elena Marshall
