Seeking blood types B+, B-, O+, and O-

“Summer is ‘trauma season’ for most emergency rooms. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, approximately two-thirds of injuries requiring emergency room admission occur during the month surrounding the Fourth of July. Independence Day is also traditionally the busiest day of the year for trauma centers nationwide. About one in seven people entering a hospital needs blood,” the news release states.

Just a reminder, tonight and every 4th Monday of the month is the Marine Villa Neighborhood Association general meeting.  The meeting location has been moved to Monroe Elementary School which is located at 3641 Missouri (corner of South Broadway and Missouri).  The school’s parking lot is accessible from Indiana Avenue.  Arrive at 6.30 for a chance to chat with your NSO and aldermen with the meeting officially beginning at 7pm.  All are welcome!

Cherokee Street Enhancement Project

Posted by Jason Deem on June 17, 2009 | 22 Comments

The Board of Public Service has released engineering plans for the street scape improvements planned for Cherokee between Nebraska and Jefferson.

The plans include new pedestrian lighting, new trees, ADA compliant curb cuts at all intersections, and removal/replacement of the brick pavers between the sidewalk and the street with concrete.

The lighting will be 14′ high double globe fixtures at the intersections and single globe fixtures along the rest of the street.  The fixtures look great in the drawings but one thing that’s unclear is the material.  The plans specify “Cast Iron Light Pole Antique Street Lamps” however the manufacture’s web site which lists this model states “All components and decorative base shall be high-strength ASTM 356.1 Cast Aluminum”.

All Along Press provides the means for artists to use printmaking equipment at very low cost in a cooperative environment.  We are also dedicated to educating people young and old in the techniques of printmaking and book arts.

CAMP Summer Sundays: “Make Space” & Bike Shop

Posted by Lyndsey Scott on June 11, 2009 | 2 Comments

Jayla knows the difference between soil and dirt.  Is it a mess, or is it fertile?   So many people ask the same of CAMP.   For the past two months, I’ve been investigating the question myself –  and I keep finding rich potential.  As the Hub project hit a political standstill in April, I decided to relax on that and invest my community-building energy in forming deeper relationships and creating accessible resource space as the Outreach Coordinator at CAMP.   Much more fun than butting heads.

Dog found @ corner of Cherokee and Minnesota

Posted by Minerva Lopez on June 11, 2009 | 9 Comments

I found this beautiful female dog on the Corner of Cherokee at Minnesota this afternoon. If you recognize it or know its owner please have them come and pick it up at 3101 Cherokee.  I am here until 4:30 p.m.

I am taking good care of this dog and will give it water, feed it and play with it until the owner shows up.  The dog will remain here over night in case someone claims it.  If no one responds, I plan to take it to the Human Society tomorrow before 5:00 p.m.

MetroLink Extension Back on the Table?

Posted by Jason Deem on June 11, 2009 | 3 Comments

According to a recent article in the Post Dispatch, Rep. William Lacy Clay has submitted a congressional spending request to fund the Northside-Southside MetroLink extensions.  Beginning in 2005 a two-year study (download pdf) was done to evaluate the feasibility of various route options.  The final recommendation (click map at left to enlarge) for the Southside was to route the extension down Jefferson at street level to Hwy 55 with stops at Arsenal and Cherokee among others.  Sounds like it might be a longshot but if it goes through this would obviously be a huge benefit to Cherokee and the surrounding neighborhoods.
