Posted by Eric Woods on February 24, 2009 | Leave a Comment

We are planning the first annual Cherokee Street Open House slated to kick off April 4th, 2009. The Cherokee Street Open House will be a showcase of the existing businesses that are operating up and down Cherokee Street and is an opportunity to promote retail sales, develop new business, and recruit prospective businesses to consider Cherokee Street as a location.

The Firecracker Press will be creating a poster to advertise the event, designing an ad to run in Sauce Magazine, and help produce radio spots to aire on KDHX 88.1FM. We’ll be coming around to ask for your support and be collecting names of businesses who might want to see their name in the advertising.

A new firearms assembly with internet sales business is being proposed at 3300 Utah/3305 Virginia, across the street from the circular planter at the entrance to our neighborhood. The building owner and potential proprietor will present details of this proposal to the West Corner Community Block Unit at its monthly meeting this Tuesday February 24, 2009 at 7:00 pm at the Typo Cafe, 3159 Cherokee Street. Alderman Craig Schmidt, NSO Barb Potts and members of the community will be in attendance. Everyone is welcome to come and hear the details of this proposal.

ComeUnity Hub: How do YOU play?

“In a world continuously presenting unique challenges and ambiguity,
play prepares us for an evolving planet.”

True that. Staying flexible and open-hearted in the midst of  “things unsolved” is a sure way to influence the outcome for the better.   Essential to our neighborhood’s increasing health and vitality is a vibrant, safe place to play together — and play is not just for kids.   When we can see the silly and intrigue in each other,  suspicion and defenses fade quick to interest.  From that posture, it’s a lot easier to collaboratively solve problems and feel the resource brimming just beneath the surface of Exactly Where We Are.

Moratorium Ends on Cherokee

The final version of the 20th ward liquor bill sponsored by Craig Schmid was presented at the January 29th Public Safety Committee meeting and passed on February 13th, 2009.  The 3-page piece of legislation has come a long way since its original 6-page version (see previous post) presented in May 2008.  The most significant change in this final round is an exception to the moratorium for businesses “operating a premises with a Cherokee Street address from the west curbline of Iowa Avenue to the east curbline of Nebraska Avenue”  The moratorium on new drink licenses for the rest of the 20th ward will remain in place for another 3 years.

“The beauty of the maturation of Cherokee Street over the past couple of months is that it has not shown a familiar trajectory for a St. Louis revitalization. There are no posh nightclubs with "pioneer" status nor any ultra-elite art galleries present.

Rather, there's an organized community dedicated to improving quality of life and maintaining the uniqueness of St. Louis's most diverse and urban business district.”
