Got ideas? What would strengthen our neighborhood?

WHAT INNOVATION IN HOW WE LIVE, WORK, AND PLAY TOGETHER WOULD STRENGTHEN OUR NEIGHBORHOOD?

How can we have the greatest impact on the Benton Park West neighborhood and surrounding areas?   Who would benefit?  How would the neighborhood be strengthened?

The Incarnate Word Foundation has agreed to invest $25,000 to seed what those who care about the neighborhood decide would be most effective in answering these questions.

Please join us on SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 15, 9:00 A.M. – 4:00 P.M. at the CHEROKEE BUSINESS INCUBATOR, 2715 CHEROKEE ST. (between Ohio and Iowa) —

-to share your thoughts, dreams, and vision for the neighborhood

Pan de Muerto

Pan de Muerto

Don’t forget you are all part of the Day of the Dead celebration happening this weekend on Cherokee Street (Lemp to Gravois) and surrounding neighborhoods.

Altar materials are available for pick up at Gooolll (2646 Cherokee) after 12:00 p.m.  We have: Papel Picado banners, Sugar Skulls, and a coupon for Day of the Dead bread you can honor at any of the local bakeries.  I have asked the participating businesses to offer samples of pan de muerto or hot chocolate as a welcoming gesture to the persons visiting/viewing the ofrendas.  Some businesses have already began to set up their Altars/Ofrendas: Latinoamericana Supermarket, Tower Tacos, etc.  The CSBA Cherokee Station Business Association has paid to advertise Day of the Dead in the RFT.  This event will also be featured in their calendar section.

The Marine Villa Neighborhood Association is excited to welcome Stray Rescue to our next meeting.

Stray Rescue does great things for people and animals in our community, but myself and my neighbors have had a personal experience with them. About a year and a half ago Pam and I observed two dogs hanging around our blocks. After some inquiring we realized they were strays and they were living at a vacant house across the alley from me. Along with some other neighbors we began feeding them, but they were just too afraid of people to come to us, obviously being abused and living on the streets for a long time. It was heartbreaking to watch, and before long we realized that they had six puppies. We called Stray Rescue and that same day a volunteer came out and performed the heroic task of climbing under the crawl space of the house and rescuing each puppy. This was a volunteer who was on her way to work, making herself late and ruining her clothes, in a selfless act to get these puppies to a new and safe life. The puppies have been adopted and all of our lives are better for it.

While I know everyone is excited about Lyndsey’s photo exhibit and cannot wait to attend on Saturday; I’d also thought I’d let you know about the 25 SLU students that are coming to Cherokee on Saturday to volunteer as part of their ’08 Community Day.  El Centro Cultural de México (Minerva Lopez) will coordinate the activities.  1/2 of the group will assist with Day of the Dead continuing preparations while the other half will be available should anyone need a hand.  If anyone is interested in getting some assistance on Saturday, please reply to this post.

Day of the Dead Masks

Posted by Eric Woods on October 18, 2008 | Leave a Comment

The Firecracker Press has made a series of masks based on Mexican folklore to commemorate Dia de los Muertos. These masks are printed from hand-carved woodblocks and feature La Llorona (the Weeping Woman), El Chupacabra (the Goat Sucker), and La Calavera (the Skull). We’re selling them for $15 each. If you’re a Cherokee Street business owner we’ll give you a set for FREE as long as you hang them in your window prior to Nov. 1st.

Stop by The Firecracker Press and get yours while they last – 2838 Cherokee Street – (314)776-7271

Cherokee Community Photo Show & Party

Please join us for a community photo show
and catered public reception

SATURDAY OCTOBER 25 1-3pm

at the Cherokee Business Incubator 2715 Cherokee Street
(where the Obama HQ and African Bazaar are)

As an artist here, I talk to strangers and go to meetings. I introduce and translate. I wonder out loud how to employ creative means to redistribute resources. What constitutes ‘wise investment?’ Is it security cameras? Or putting digital cameras into the hands of the kids who walk these streets? What conditions create a safe, successful, and equitable neighborhood in the long run?

Día de los Muertos STL 2008

From the beginning of time, man has felt the need to explain the mystery of life and death. Many civilizations and cultures have created rituals to try and give meaning to human existence….

…To the indigenous peoples of Mexico, death was considered the passage to a new life and so the deceased were buried with many of their personal objects, which they would need in the hereafter….

El Día de los Muertos is a beautiful ritual in which Mexicans happily and lovingly remember their relatives that have died. Much like when we go to a graveyard to leave some lovely flowers on a tomb of a relative.

Cranky Yellow (2122 Cherokee Street) is hosting Mr. Ben and his amazing intricate designs and irreverent zines tonight, Friday October 3. The show opens at 7PM and runs until 11. Mr. Ben’s zines are filled with quirky illustrations and brain-tingling poetry, excerpts from a perverse and diverse mind. The drawings are filled to the brim with an outpouring of eye-catching strangeness, intricate amalgamations of the artist’s imagination.

Food and drinks will be provided, even gots a DJ for some audio enjoyment!

Here’s an example of his work:

CAMP needs more bikes

Posted by Eric Stiens on October 1, 2008 | Leave a Comment

Yes, who would have thought that this could have ever dwindled, but it has. CAMP seeks donations of bikes, no matter the condition, to keep the neighborhood on two wheels. We are especially in need of youth BMX style bikes, adult mountain bikes, 20″ wheels and tires, and always always in need of tubes and patches.

As always, we need you too. If you want to help fix/build bikes, stop by our open bike shop hours on Saturdays, from 1-4 PM. No experience necessary!

Bikes can be dropped off at any time, just email me at eric@stlcamp.org so I know you are coming by.
